Updated: Sep 19, 2020

In the current times and economic climate, it is necessary for both parents to work, resulting in most South Africans spending their day away from home, which leaves their properties and belongings unattended and vulnerable.

Alarming Statistics of SA

Housebreaking is the number one crime in SA

The most likely victims of housebreaking were male-headed households, households in metros, Indian/Asian households followed by white households, very low and very high-income households, and households in Northern Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. Approximately 48% of affected households reported incidences to the police.

House robberies occur when people are confronted and become victims of theft in their homes. In 2018/19. There were 22,431 incidents of house robbery reported – up from 22,261 in 2017/18. Sixty-one households are getting robbed each day. South Africa 2017/18 victims of crime survey revealed that only 59% of victims reported the crime to the police.

Why Insure?

According to these alarming statistics, working hard for our possessions it makes sense to ensure them. Over and above this there might be rare items and items with a sentimental value which could be very difficult to replace. Surely, you should mitigate the risk of losing it! These possessions are much more than just things. They are part of you, defines you, things that make your life comfortable and unique. What if, the unexpected happens? Are you covered at the right amount to enable you to replace your possessions?

What can I Insure under Household Content / Goods?

Let’s have a look at what define household goods/content. Household contents consist of everything in your house, clothing, shoes, curtains the regular stuff, audio-visual equipment. Even the things in your garage and your patio furniture. “Everything you take with you when you move”.

There are 3 types of content/goods insurance:

The first is to fix the item if possible

The second is sum-insured also known as “replacement value” cover which will cover you for the value of your possessions, considering depreciation.

The third type is “total replacement” or as we know it “old -for-new”. If an item is stolen or damaged, your insurance covers the cost of a brand-new replacement.
